The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
- Location: Zhangjiajie, Hunan, China (Continent of Asia)
- Built by: Designed by Israeli Architect Haim Dotan
- How long to build: About 18 months
- Date built: Construction completed in 2016
- Size: It is 1,410 ft (430 m) long, 20 ft (6 m) wide, 984 ft (300 m) high
- Weight: About 5 million lbs (2,200 tons)
- It is the world’s longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge, and it is over the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (张家界大峡谷).
- There was a naming contest for the bridge, and the winner won $5,000 (¥30,000). The winning name was “ Yun Tian Du” ( 云天渡) which means “the way for people under heaven.”
- The bridge’s design was to be as invisible as possible, to disappear into the clouds. This way, the natural beauty of the canyon could be seen.
- There are five layers of special glass and materials measuring about 2 in (50 mm) thick to help make up the bridge.
- To test the glass’s strength, some invited visitors hit the glass with sledgehammers (massive hammers). It did break, but not into pieces because of the unique materials. (Don’t worry, everyone was ok!) The designers proved their glass was strong by driving an SUV over the glass, and it did not break!
- It can hold up to 800 people at a time.
- There is a place where you can bungee jump 919 ft (280 m) into the canyon (the world’s highest bungee jump), go ziplining, do yoga, and at night there is sometimes live entertainment like dancing, music, and fashion shows.
