Boulders Beach

  • Boulders Beach
    Africa
Location: Simon’s Town (south of Cape Town), South Africa (Continent of Africa)
  • What’s interesting here? There is an African penguin colony that lives here, and you can get up close to them
  • How many are there?: Today, there are about 3,000 of them
  • Date they arrived: In 1982, two pairs (4 penguins) of penguins arrived in False Bay (the body of water the beach is at) and started the colony
  • Their numbers are decreasing, and they are on the Endangered list because their habitat is becoming smaller, and there is insufficient food and pollution. So today, the beach is protected by law to help their numbers hopefully recover.
  • You can go and see them, but you must keep your distance and can not feed them. There is a fee (money) to enter. There is a boardwalk that goes out to the beach, where you can go and see the penguins.
  • You can swim here, but it is at a different part of the beach than the boardwalk. You may meet a penguin friend, but don’t touch if one swims up to you.
