Diwali

  • When do people celebrate Diwali, and why do they celebrate it?
  • What are the different religions that celebrate Diwali? Does each religion celebrate this holiday for the same reasons? If not, what are the differences?
  • How many days does Diwali last, and what do you do each day?
  • What is the importance of a rangoli? What are they made of, and what designs have you done?
  • One of the most important symbols for Diwali is a “Diyas,” or clay lamp. Why are they so important, and where do people put them after lightening them?
  • The 5th day of Diwali is called (depending on which religion) “Bhai Dooj,” “Bhai Tika,” or “Bhai Bijis,” which is a special day for brothers and sisters. Why is it necessary, and what do they do on this day? What if the brother has more than one sister, or what if he has no sisters? What will he do?
  • What are the most popular dishes that people prepare for Diwali? What is your favorite, and who makes it?
