Black Mamba

Animal class: Reptiles– (Their bodies are covered in bony plates or scales, they breathe air with lungs, are cold-blooded (their bodies cannot hold heat and must warm themselves by their surroundings like the sun), have vertebrae (spine or backbone), most have 4 legs, they lay eggs (Some species like the Viper (snake) will keep their eggs in their bodies until the egg hatches. Then the baby is born. A few rare species have a live birth like the Three-toed skink), and their sizes range from the Brookesia nana (a chameleon) at .55 in (1.4 cm) to the Saltwater crocodile at 20 ft (6 m)) (Example: Lizards, turtles, snakes, and alligators. There are about 9,000 different species.)
- Diet: Carnivore (They only eat meat): Birds, mice, other types of snakes, bats, bush babies, mongooses, and other small mammals
- Lifespan: About 11 years
- Predators: Mongooses, foxes, giant birds, and jackals
- Size: About 8-14 ft (2-4 m) long
- Species: There are four different species of Black mamba, but there are over 3,000 different species of snakes.
- Speed: About 14 mph (23 kph)
- Status: Least Concern
- Weight: About 4 lbs. (2 kg)
Where do they live?: They live in the northern part of southern Africa, in the rocky hills, wooded lands, and the savannas
- It is Africa’s deadliest snake.
- The inside of their mouth is black, which is supposed to help scare off their predators. Their mouth is also where they get their names. Their bodies are tan (light brown), olive (light green), and darker brown.
- They are highly venomous and shy, but when threatened, they are aggressive and can kill a person with two drops of venom, but there is a cure if given in about 20 minutes.
- When these snakes are born, they already have venom in their fangs.
- These snakes can swim.
- At night, they burrow in the ground, and during the day, they can be found in trees lying in the sun.
