Immortal Jellyfish

  • Immortal Jellyfish
    Animal class: Scyphozoa (They are called “true jellyfish,” they have a bell or an umbrella shape, have tentacles (long thin string-like arms to help them eat, move around, and protect themselves), have soft jelly-like bodies with no bones or vertebrae, have no brain, eyes, heart, have no digestive tract (this means that their food go in and out of the same hole) the females will lay eggs that the male in the water fertilizes then the egg attaches to a hard surface, and then the lifecycle begins, and their sizes rang from the Irukandji box jellyfish at .8 in (2 mm) to the Lion Mane jellyfish at 120 ft (37 m))(Examples: Fried Egg jellyfish, Immortal jellyfish, Bloodybelly Comb jellyfish, and Box jellyfish ) There are around 2,000 different species)
  • Diet: Carnivore (They only eat meat)-Plankton, fish eggs, and small mollusks
  • Lifespan: When it is physically damaged or even starved, they go back to a polyp (or a baby) and starts the growth process over again, so they could live forever if not eaten
  • Predators: Bigger jellyfish, sea anemones, fish, sharks, sea turtles, and penguins
  • Size: About 0.18 in (4.5 mm) big
  • Species: There is only 1 in its species, but there are over 2,000 different species of jellyfish
  • Status: Not Threatened
  • Weight: About .03 oz. (1 g)
  • Immortal Jellyfish MapWhere do they live?: They are found in warm ocean waters around the world, like the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans.
  • They are mainly transparent (clear) with a bright red stomach and are bell-shaped with about 90 tentacles.
  • Jellyfish do not have brains but have nerves in their tentacles to help them touch the things around them, sense water temperature, and help catch prey.
  • They can sting you, but they will not kill you. It will just hurt.
  • They have amazing regenerating (to regrow) abilities. They can regrow their tentacles and turn themselves back into babies to heal their whole body.
